Know all about TEU?
The abbreviation TEU stands for Twenty Foot Equivalent Unit. 1 TEU is a container 20 feet long, 8 wide and usually 8.5 high and is the standardized designation for the size of a standard container. TEU can be used as a standardized unit in ocean freight to indicate the carrying capacity of cargo ships by the number of TEUs that can fit on a ship. A container is used to transport goods by sea.
TEU sea freight
Both the capacity of and a container ship and the cargo is indicated in number of TEU in sea freight. This simplifies the processes in transportation and therefore reduces the share of transportation costs. As a result, transport costs are often less than 10% on the total cost. The container ship where the most number of TEU can be shipped is the HMM Algeciras. As many as 23,964 TEU can be shipped on this container ship.
Container Dimensions
Both the 20-foot ISO container and the 40-foot ISO container have fixed dimensions. The 40-foot ISO container is exactly 40 feet (12.192 meters) long. So that two TEUs exactly match one 40-foot ISO container, they are not quite 20 feet long, but only 9 feet and 10.5 inches long, leaving a 3-inch gap. Both containers are 2.438 feet wide. The height can be different for both containers. They are called low-cube or high-cube containers.
